SALISH GHOST

A spectral study of Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island has been shaped through deep time by human and non-human forces, from its geological formation over 100 million years ago to at least 4000 years of human presence. For SALISH GHOST, we will use sensory tools to let the land speak and trace the entanglements and spectres that haunt the island, exploring the visible realities and those that lie beyond our perception. Through geographical research (archives, interviews, maps), experimental imaging (macro, infrared, photogrammetry) and sound recording (vibrational, electromagnetic, data-sonification) methods, we aim to uncover spectral traces of the land’s manifold pasts, as well as illuminate some of the invisible processes that define its present. Additionally, with the assistance of geospatial technician Olivier Makuch, we will explore using technologies such as LiDAR and geospatial datasets to help reveal narratives embedded in broader spatial and temporal scales.
